Where should I park when I arrive at Algonquin College? How much does parking cost?
Parking is available in lot 1, closest to Building “A”, at a rate of $2.00 per 30 minutes.
Parking is also available a short walk (est. 10m) on the East side of campus in lots 8, 9, 10, 12 for a flat rate fee of $5.00 per day.
How long does my hair have to be to participate?
There is no minimum hair length needed to participate in this fundraising event! All hair donations measuring 6” or longer will be evaluated for the wig-making process, and all other hair is redirected to our partner Green Circle Salons for their environmental recycling initiatives. This means that you can still join the event and fundraise to have your head or beard shaved! No hair goes to waste!
What do you mean by “no hair goes to waste”?
Our partnership with Green Circle Salons ensures that all the hair cut at the event is used in one capacity or another. Any hair suitable for the wig-making process is used towards making wigs for local children suffering for hair loss. Any hair that is deemed unsuitable for wigs (shorter than 6 inches in length, beard trimmings, scrap pieces of hair, etc.) is redirected to Green Circle Salons who uses this so-called reject hair to create hair booms that help with oil spill clean ups in our oceans, lakes and on beaches. Win-Win!
How much is the fundraising minimum?
Participating children & youth (under 18 years of age) have a fundraising minimum of $75, the minimum for adults (18 years and over) is $150.
When/where can I schedule my hair appointment?
Several weeks before the event takes place, the Hair Donation Ottawa team will send out a link for participants to select their appointment time. Using Picktime Scheduling, you can see the availability for each time slot and sign up for the time that best suits you.
How long does an appointment take?
An appointment typically lasts 30-45 minutes depending on the services needed (cut vs. shave). We ask that each participant arrives about 30 minutes before their appointment to register, submit any remaining fundraising proceeds and have the before photo taken.
I am currently an apprentice hair stylist. Am I qualified to volunteer for the event?
Yes, hair stylists who have completed their training and are working as an apprentice are welcome to participate with the support of a certified stylist from their salon. Each certified stylist can supervise up to two (2) apprentices at Hair Donation Ottawa.
Can I fundraise to shave my beard or mustache at the event?
Definitely! There is no minimum hair length needed to participate in the fundraising event! All hair donations measuring 6” or longer will be evaluated for the wig-making process and all other hair (shorter than 6 inches in length, beard trimmings, scrap pieces of hair, etc.) is redirected to our partner Green Circle Salons for their environmental recycling initiatives. This means that you can still join the event and fundraise to have your beard or mustache shaved!
Will there be food at the event?
There will be light snacks and water available on-site for participants. There are also several nearby food & beverage options at College Square, including Kettleman’s Bagels, Harvey’s, Loblaws, McDonalds, Pizza Pizza, Popeyes Chicken, Starbucks, Subway, and Tim Horton’s.
Do the children who receive wigs from the proceeds of this event have to pay for them?
No, we are proud to be able to create approximately 10 wigs each year from this event. These wigs are provided free of charge to local children in Ottawa and the surrounding areas who are suffering from hair loss.
My child is a CHEO cancer patient. How can we apply to receive a wig?
Please speak with your nurse or doctor at CHEO’s Medical Day Unit for more information about how to apply.
How will the fundraising proceeds be used?
• Cutting Edge Childhood Cancer Research at the CHEO Research Institute.
• Two annual $500 Bursaries to financially challenged Algonquin College Hair Stylist Program students to help offset their tuition fees and/or text books.
• All suitable hair donations go towards the custom manufacture & fitting & of approx. 10 free wigs a year for financially challenged children in Ottawa & region who are experiencing hair loss for a variety of medical reasons.
• We proudly support Green Circle Salons: All hair unsuitable for the wig-making process is sent off to be made into Hair Booms for oil spills on the world’s beaches, lakes & oceans.
• The manufacture and supply of free a trendy head scarf for every CHEO patient that needs one.
I have hair that I would like to donate but cannot make it to the event. Is there somewhere I can send my hair beforehand?
Hair Preparation Guidelines - For Donation Before or After Event
Minimum 10-inch length hair donations - Treated and grey hair is accepted.
Hair cut years ago is usable if it has been stored in a ponytail or braid.
Curly hair may be pulled straight to measure the minimum of 10 inches and up.
Hair that is swept off the floor is not usable.
Hair that is shaved off and is not in a ponytail or braid is not usable.
We cannot accept dreadlocks, wigs, falls, hair extensions or synthetic hair.
Please ensure your hair has been washed and thoroughly blow-dried before it is cut at your local hair salon. Your hair stylist will do the following:
Secure ponytails or braids with tight rubber bands at both ends. A second hair band can be placed around the middle of the ponytail to help keep the hair together. Note: If the hair comes out of the band, it will not be usable
Cut the hair above the rubber band NOT below.
Make sure you have the length left on your hair that you wish to have without compromising the needed length in the donated hair.
Place your DRY HAIR in an envelope or plastic bag and include information on the length of hair donated & the donor's name, address, date of birth & email. NOTE: Hair Donation Ottawa do NOT send a certificate of appreciation to any hair donors mailing in hair.
You can then either drop your hair off at the Hair Donation Ottawa main event OR mail to:
